Some of my favourite movie/tv series scenarios is when there are tragic events unfolding on screen married to a beautiful sound track. Often a song from way back when computers filled out an entire building and barely had the computational power to do a simple sum.
The music tracks often serve a dual purpose: Amplify the travesty of the situation at hand by showing a stark contrast in the good and bad of the event playing out before our eyes and how our hearts feel about it. Secondly, give us something to pin our hopes on to even if illusory at best.
Been thinking a lot about American political leadership, in particular the GoP and how undependable they have been in upholding norms and defending the constitution and rights of all Americans. As an out of control Justice Department ravages America, the catastrophic short sightedness of some in leadership and their deafening silence have served to amplify the soundtrack of America in this very moment:
"You can depend on me" by Brenda Lee.
As America lies wounded and bleeding, unreliable leadership towers over it. Not to offer aid but rather to stand immobile as life ebbs away from the great nation. Paralysed by fear of criticism from the corrupt media apparatus and perhaps driven into inaction by a loathing of the populace they are meant to serve. Utterly undependable. The soundtrack that defines this moment makes it even more poignant as beauty is yet to be found in ashes.
